Auto Theft: What You Should Know About It

There are lots of auto theft myths that if you try to analyze them you will be surprise to know that none of them are even close to reality.

Myth No. 1 “My car is not a luxury car therefore safe from thieves.”

Take for instance the common notion that only expensive cars are the favorite of car thieves. Never assume that since your car is not a luxury car it is safe from car thefts. It is surprising to know that most of the stolen cars are common vehicles and are at least a few years old. Why is this? First of all spare parts of older cars are often hard to find which makes them expensive. So in case you have a very old model instead of selling the car for less why not sell its parts instead. LOL

Some of the most commonly and frequently stolen cars include Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Oldsmobile Cutclass, and Honda Civic.

Myth No. 2 “Insurance will pay me in case my car is stolen.”

Most car owners are not aware of the coverage of their car insurance and often assume that when their car is stolen they get to receive the 100 percent cost of their vehicle. This is the ideal and of course what we want as policyholders unfortunately the car insurance system does not work that way.  Instead of the 100 percent cost of your vehicle returned to you what you get is the depreciated value of your car provided that your car’s coverage is a comprehensive one in case that its not, then you will not receive any payment for auto theft.

Myth No. 3 “It’s not a hassle if my car is stolen.”

Well if you are one of those individuals who really don’t give a damn for their car then this very myth holds true for you but for an average earner without so much spare dollars for a new car, a stolen car can be devastating. Just think of all the hassle of commuting to work, if you have your own car then it would be much convenient and faster for you to drive to work.

Common reasons for stealing cars:

1.    To sell the vehicle
2.    To sell the parts
3.    To obtain transportation or as a getaway car in event of bank robberies, hostage dramas, and other similar crimes.
4.    To trade for drugs
5.    Plain fun or to go joyriding usually committed by juvenile thieves
6.    To commit other crimes usually terrorristic in nature and commonly wired with bombs and crashed through buildings or made to explode in densely populated areas.
7.    To commit insurance fraud
8.    To clone vehicle by making use of your car’s license plate and employing it in another vehicle of the same model as your car and using this vehicle in illegal activities.

These are just some of the common gimmicks of car thieves there are still some more so be very careful.

A Car-Tilt versus a Car Jack

This is one of those good ideas turn bad. A car lift in your home garage is a dream come true for most owners but the cost can prove to be a nightmare. And this does not only pertain to the very price of the lift but for the extra cost that goes with additional concrete works that needs to be done to accommodate the lift not to mention the creation of a proper and environmentally-sound drainage.

Lucky for those who have $1,400 there is the Eastwood Tilt-A-Car which is a much affordable option but of course as expected from inexpensive gadgets there are some features that are sacrificed. Since it lacks much of the convenience of a lift you would have to drain all the fluids off your car before you can start lifting your car on its side.

And according to Eastwood their Tilt-A-Car can lift a car or truck weighing up to 6,800 pounds all the way up to 90 degrees. "There are two rocker assembles attached to the wheel lugs on one side of the vehicle while a threaded lift screw connects to the lugs of a wheel on the opposite side. A 3/8" corded or cordless drill then lifts the car up by pulling the ends of the threaded rod inward."

By the way the price of $1,400 doesn't yet include the freight shipping which means that it would still cost your more.

But of course for those of us that doesn't have the extra $1,400 to waste on a car lift contraption then I guess we'll just have to settle for the good old reliable jacks that we have although a lift can provide us with better access to the underbody for rust repairs and repainting than the jacks.

Anyway even with car jacks we still have to make sure that we are doing things correctly.  Usually, we use jacks when replacing tires since underbody rust repairs and repainting are done at car repair shops, obviously since they are meant for the pro.

And speaking of jacking your car the right way, ehow.com has the instructions to help you do it correctly:

1.    Secure your car by parking it on a level ground. Don't forget to pull up the parking brake. Leave the manual transmission in first gear or reverse and then put automatics in park.
2.    Don't forget to place a chock or a brick behind or in front of the wheel diagonally opposite one being jacked up depending on the road's incline.
3.    Place the jack under the car's frame nearest the wheel to be jacked up. Look for the thin lip that runs along the side of your car since this is where you should place the jack. Consult your owner's manual to be guided on where the safest place to position the jack.  And remember that bumper jacks are attached to slots in the front or rear bumper on much older models.
4.    Once the jack is properly positioned, insert the handle according to the directions on the jack, and then turn the ratchet the handle to make the jack rise. In instances where it doesn't badge or cannot be turn, try to rotate the handle the other way, or flip the switch marked R and L which stands for raise and lower.
5.    Try to raise the hack high enough to replace your tire or simply to place the car on a jack stand. If you are to change a flat tire don't forget to leave an extra room since new tires are full of air and therefore more bloated as compared to the tire you removed.
6.    After you are through, lower the jack but be sure to do this carefully and cautiously. If you used a jack stand remember that before lowering the jack you will have to raise the car slightly to pull the stand from its place.

Hope the above instructions prove to be of help to you.

Toyotas Top American Executive Now with Chrysler

The departure of the only American and highest ranking executive of Toyota in North America, Jim Press was a shock to industry insiders. Mr. Press first worked for Ford in 1960s and then transferred to Toyota in 1970 and from then on became one of the strongest forces in the North American operation of the Japanese automaker.

Mr. Press will become Mr. Pres-ident of Chrysler next Friday as announced by the company.

It can be remembered that it was only last June that Mr. Press was appointed as Senior Managing Director at Toyota becoming the first ever foreign national to join its Japanese board of directors. The appointment of Mr. Press in the Japanese management lineup was to help prevent a possible resurgence of Japan-US trade friction.

Although pirating of executives from rivals is common among US and European automakers, Mr. Press is the first Toyota Executive to be tempted by a competitor. Other Toyota executives have tried to stop Press from leaving after he announced his intention to quit a week ago.

According to a disappointed Toyota executive interviewed last Thursday night: "It probably reflects the way things are done in the U.S. auto industry. It is all the more regrettable because we had high expectations for his future performance."

A Japanese executive by the name of Shigeru Hayakawa, age 53 who is the Executive Vice President and at the same time the Managing Officer of Toyota will succeed Press.

Chrysler is expecting for Press to rebuild its operations and unlike Robert Nardelli whom Cerberus appointed as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Press has a lot of experience in the auto industry of which a great part consist of his stay with Toyota.

With Mr. Press now with Chrysler we will see if the automaker can really recover.

Concept of Green Cars from the Past

The concept of green cars is not new anymore and to prove it Autoblog Green has listed the Top Ten Articles that showcase Green Cars that were introduced in the past:

1.    The Low-Cost Homemade Car that Runs 40 Miles per Gallon- built by former college professor using the frame and wheels of a 1934 Ford and scrap lumber. This car gets 40 mpg.
2.    Water Succeeds Gasoline As New Invention Is Perfected (Dec, 1935)- the concept use by BMW for its Hydrogen 7 was perfected an introduced by G.H. Garrett when he succeeded in splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen.
3.    Three-Wheeled Auto Makes Speed with Low Fuel Cost (Oct, 1924)- The Flivver which is a three-wheeled automobile designed in Germany with a close top and doors like those found on bigger cars. The said car does not consume much fuel but has a speed of ten miles an hour on good roads. And the best about this car? The government has not imposed any tax on it and is permitted for use even by those without drivers license.
4.    Flier Designs Streamline "Push Button" Car (Nov, 1938)- designed by a California airman, this car lowers down fuel consumption by employing smart designs that include a covered front wheel.
5.    Japanese Minicar (Dec, 1958)- who would have though that SUBARU has built a minicar in the past. Its called the 360. This 1958 Subaru is equipped with a two-cylinder, two-cycel air-cooled engine which enables it to reach a top speed of 50 mph. Gas consumption was around 62 mpg.
6.    A New Switch for Electrics (Jul, 1973)-this is an article about the electric vehicles of the early seventies.
7.    Motorcyclette Has Speed, Comfort (Feb, 1932)-the Motorcyclette make use of the riders feet as brakes thank goodness its not made anymore or else just think of the number of shoes that you will ruin in the process.
8.    Motor Scooter Burns LPG (Dec, 1955)- the use of LPG on vehicles are also employed at present in fact in the Philippines there are jeepneys and taxis using LPG as their fuel source. Its more economical, practical and above all not that harmful to the environment. It was Ralph Carlton of Wauchula, Fla., that started the use of LPG when he converted his standard scooter into an LPG-burner with a few minor engine changes.
9.    Postman Goes Around on Motor Scooter (Jul, 1939)-as the title of the article suggest these are motorized scooters used by mailmen and was proposed by Henry R. Smith, letter carries of Columbia, S. C. who has constructed one of his own.
10.    Auto Fuel From Cow Manure (Sep, 1949)- A German inventor by the name of Harnisch has developed a simple device which converts manure into fuel that will in turn be used to drive autos and tractors as well as provide household power.

Nissans New Anti Drunk-Driving Technology

Nissan has recently revealed a new car concept that features a multiple preventive features which the automaker claimed would decrease drunk-driving. These multiple preventive technology of Nissan would assess a driver's state of soberness and basing on the assessment the car would activate a range of preventive measures to the extent of immobilization of the vehicle. Cool huh?!

However the question is: Will it make production? Since we know from experience concept vehicles often remains as is-- "nothing but idea". Anyway if Nissan would really pushed through with it many drivers will be prevented from drunk driving which is a good thing of course.

Here's what to expect from Nissan's new safety gadget courtesy of theautochannel.com:

Alcohol Odor Sensors

Shift Knob Sensor
1) A hi-sensitivity alcohol odor sensor is built into the transmission shift knob, which is able to detect the presence of alcohol in the perspiration of the driver's palm as he or she attempts to start driving. When the alcohol-level detected is above the pre-determined threshold, the system automatically locks the transmission, immobilizing the car. A "drunk-driving" voice alert is also issued via the car navigation system.

Passenger Seat Sensor
2) Additional alcohol odor sensors are also incorporated into the driver's and passenger seats to detect the presence of alcohol in the air inside the vehicle cabin. When alcohol is detected, the system issues both a voice alert and a message alert on the navigation system monitor.

Facial Monitoring System Camera
A camera is mounted on the instrument cluster facing the driver to monitor the driver's face.

Facial Image
The system is calibrated to monitor the driver's state of consciousness through their eyes. When the system detects signs of drowsiness, a voice and message alert is triggered via the navigation system. Additionally, a seat-belt mechanism is activated, which tightens around the driver to gain his or her immediate attention.

Driving Behavior
By constantly monitoring the operational behavior of the vehicle (e.g. sensing if the vehicle is drifting out of its driving lane), the system can identify signs of inattentiveness or distraction in the driver. When the system detects such behavior, voice and message alerts are issued via the navigation system. The seat-belt alert mechanism is also activated, tightening around the driver to gain immediate attention.

According to Nissan they would just use the concept car as a platform for future production cars that would showcased the new technology.

Nissan has previously intriduced their drunk-driving message alert incorporated on the naviagation system. And last July the automaker has also began testing a new on-board breathalyzer system in cooperation with a number of local government authorities in Japan.

And today NIssan is once again introducing another approach to safe driving and its through the Intelligent Transport System Project or ITS. The automaker is also hoping to reduce future road accidents in Japan involving NIssan vehicles by 2015.
